(June 11,2014) Spiritual Message for the Day – Dispel ignorance through Knowledge by Swami Krishnananda

 Dispel ignorance through Knowledge
Divine Life Society Publication: Chapter 7 – Commentary on the Panchadasi by Swami Krishnananda

The seven stages – namely, ignorance, veil, vikshepa or distraction, indirect knowledge, direct knowledge, freedom from sorrow, and attainment of bliss – these seven stages are the stages through which the jiva has to pass. They are superimposed on the jiva, and there is tadatmya adhyasa – mutual superimposition – between the condition of the jiva and the stages mentioned.

We may not argue that the stages are superimposed on the imperishable Brahman. That would be to argue that clouds are obstructing the sun. Thus, these processes, these seven stages – ignorance onwards until liberation – are conditioning factors of the jiva only and are not to be imagined as being superimposed on Brahman because in that case the whole universe is superimposed on Brahman.

All these stages, such as the feeling, "I am samsari, I am bound to earthly existence" and "I am liberated, I am free, I am endowed with knowledge, I am now free from sorrow and I am enjoying bliss or happiness" – are subsequent stages of the jiva only. They are subsequent to the preceding stages, namely, ajnana and avarana, ignorance and veiling. They may appear to be superimposed on Brahman, yet they should not be considered as really connected with Brahman in any way whatsoever because the feelings "I am ignorant" and "I am free" cannot arise in Brahman. Even if there is an eclipse of the sun, the sun is not affected by it. The eclipse is only for us who perceive it.
Though nothing can exist here in this world – neither bondage nor freedom can exist without Brahman's existence – yet Brahman is uncontaminated with these processes. They are connected only with the jiva.

The two types of knowledge, indirect and direct, dispel ignorance  (ajnana) and all the effects of ignorance (avarana), such as the wrong notion that God does not exist or that there is no proof for the existence of God because God is not visible.

There are two kinds (phases) of ignorance, two phases of ignorance, rather: asattavarana and abhana avarana. Due to the avarana of maya, known as asattavarana, one has no consciousness of even the existence of Brahman. Avarana, or veil, instills the wrong notion into the mind so that one is made to feel it does not exist. The indirect knowledge which is obtained through study as well as instruction from a Guru is capable of destroying that secondary ignorance which makes us feel that God does not exist, Brahman does not exist, etc.

The other kind (phase) of ignorance is abhana avarana, the veil that covers the consciousness of there being such a thing at all called Brahman. Direct knowledge or actual experience of Brahman dispels the other kind of ignorance which covers the consciousness of Brahman. That is to say, direct knowledge or experience makes one immediately conscious of Brahman as identical with one's own self.

The great problem of life, which is called samsara with all its concomitants like the feeling of agency in action, kartritva, and bhoktritva or enjoyment of fruits of action – all these appurtenances connected with the very existence of people in the world, samsara, all vanish in one minute when abhana avarana, the veil that covers the consciousness in respect of Brahman's existence, is dispelled by direct experience.

The light of Brahman illumines itself through the words of the Guru on the one hand, and manana – the intellectual investigative process – and nididhyasana conducted by the disciple.

Once ignorance has vanished, the happiness that we experience at that time, the bliss of experience, is indescribable, unthinkable, passing understanding.

The direct experience does not negate the indirect knowledge that we have already acquired. The earlier experience of the fact that Brahman exists will become more mature and get fructified in the subsequent experience, "I am verily that." Asti Brahma ("Brahman is") and Aham Brahma ( "I am verily that") – are not two contradictory experiences. The one leads to the other.

One may feel that indirect knowledge is of not much use because it gives only partial knowledge. This is not true because if we have a partial perception of a pot that is placed in front of us, it does not mean that we are not seeing the pot. The partiality in perception does not negate the reality of the perception.

Asattavarana and abhana avarana are the two kinds of veil. The asatta aspect, or the non-existence aspect of Brahman, which is a part of the ignorance, is dispelled by indirect knowledge. But the unknowableness of Brahman, which is caused by the other aspect of ignorance – abhana avarana, is dispelled by direct knowledge. Asattavarana and abhana avarana are the two veils which are dispelled respectively by indirect knowledge and direct knowledge.

(Nov 17,2013 ) Spiritual Message for the Day – Kartigai Deepam by Swami Sivananda

Kartigai Deepam
Divine Life Society Publication: Hindu Fasts and Festivals by Swami Sivananda

ON THE full moon day of the month of Kartigai (November-December) which falls on the ascension of the Kritigai star, the Hindus celebrate the Kartigai Deepam. It is on this day that the huge beacon is lit on the holy hill Arunachala, in South India.

Once Lord Shiva assumed the form of a hill at Tiruvannamalai in South India. Here He quelled the pride of Brahma and Vishnu who were quarreling as to their relative greatness. One day, when Lord Shiva was in meditation, Parvati left Him and went to the hill of Arunachala. There She performed penance. She was the guest of the sage Gautama. It was during Her penance here that Mahishasura was killed by Durga hidden by Parvati. Parvati saw Shiva as Arunachalesvara. She was taken back by the Lord to His side, and made His Ardhangini once more, that is, She occupied half of the body of the Lord.

Arunachalesvara is Tejo Lingam. Arunachala or the Tiruvannamalai Hill is the place that represents the fire element. (The five elements are represented by five holy places in India.)

When the light on the top of the Tiruvannamalai Hill is unveiled on the Kartigai Deepam day, people see the big light and worship it. They recite again and again in a loud voice “Harohara”. The esoteric meaning is that he who sees the light of lights that is burning eternally in the chambers of his heart through constant meditation attains immortality. The light on the Arunachala brings the message to you that the Self or Lord Shiva is self-effulgent; He is the light of lights.

On the Kartigai Deepam day in South India, people make bonfires in front of temples in the evening. It is said that Lord Shiva burnt the chariots of several demons who were torturing sages and celestials. This bonfire symbolizes this legend.

People place rows of earthen lamps in front of their houses on the evening of Kartigai Deepam and worship the Lord. They also light a variety of fireworks.

Annihilate the three impurities, namely, egoism, selfish action and delusion. Burn the mind, senses and the desires in the fire of knowledge of the Self or Shiva-Jnanam. Attain full illumination and behold the light of lights, which illumines the mind, intellect, sun, moon, stars, lightning and the fire. This is real Kartigai Deepam.

May the light of lights illumine you all! May Lord Shiva bless you with more light! May you merge in this supreme light and attain the eternal abode of bliss and immortality!

(July 27,2013) What is this Ego? By Gurudev

 What is this Ego?
Divine Life Society Publication: The Ego by Swami Sivananda

Ego or Egoism or Egotism or Ahamkara in Sanskrit is the self-asserting principle or Tattva born of ignorance or Prakriti. Abhimana is egoism. Garva is egoism.

The seed of this ego is the differentiating intellect or Bheda Buddhi. It is the ego which has created the idea of separateness from God or the Atman. It is the ego which is the root cause for all human sufferings and births and deaths.

This ego identifies itself with the body, mind, Prana, the senses. Wherever there is ego, there are mineness, selfishness, likes and dislikes, lust, anger, greed, hypocrisy, pride, jealousy, delusion, arrogance, conceit, impertinence, Vasanas, Trishna or cravings and Vrittis or Sankalpa, clinging to this earth-life (Abhinivesha), agency, doer (Kartha) and enjoyer (Bhokta).

You must have very clear understanding of the nature of this ego, if you want to annihilate egoism. Killing of egoism is killing of mind only. Destruction of thought, desires, cravings, mineness, selfishness, jealousy, pride, lust is really destruction of mind or egoism. Control of senses also is annihilation of the mind or egoism.

This egoism assumes a subtle form. The gross egoism is not so dangerous as the subtle egoism. Institutional egoism is a subtle form of egoism. The man identifies himself with the institution and gets attached to the institution or cult. He has no broad-mindedness or catholicity.

The working of egoism is very mysterious. It is very difficult to detect its various ways of working. It needs a subtle and sharp intellect to find out its operation. If you practise introspection daily in silence you will be able to find out its mysterious ways of working.

This ego likes his own birth place and district, people of his district, own mother tongue, his own relations and friends, his own ways of eating, mode of dressing. He has his own predilections and preferences. He dislikes others' ways of eating, dressing etc.

This ego wants to exercise power and influence over others. He wants titles, prestige, status, respect, prosperity, house, wife, children. He wants self-aggrandisement. He wishes to domineer and rule over others. If anybody points out his defects, his vanity feels offended. If anyone praises him he is elated. This ego says, I know everything. He does not know anything. What I say is quite correct. What he says is quite incorrect. He is inferior to me. I am superior to him. He forces others to follow his ways and views.

This ego will lurk like a thief when you start introspection and self-analysis. It will elude your grasp and understanding. You must be ever alert and vigilant. If you obtain the grace of the Lord through Japa, Kirtan, prayer and devotion you can easily kill this ego. Through Lord's grace only your self-surrender will become Perfect.

When this ego melts in the cosmic ego you will attain communion with the Lord or Self-realisation.
May you realise the goal of life and attain everlasting Bliss through annihilation of this little ego!

(May1,2013) Gist of Karma Yoga by Swami Sivananda

Gist of Karma Yoga
From Divine Life Society Publication “Easy Steps to Yoga” by Swami Sivananda

1. Karma Yoga is selfless service unto humanity. The important point is to serve humanity without any attachment or egoism. The central teaching of the Gita is non-attachment to work. Lord Krishna says: “Work incessantly. Your duty is to work but not expect the fruits thereof.”

2. The mind is so framed that it cannot work without expectation of fruits or anticipation of rewards or even appreciation. You will have to train the mind to work disinterestedly. Worldly people cannot understand the spirit of Nishkamya Karma Yoga as their minds are charged or saturated with impurities. Do vigorous service for some time. You will grasp the spirit of Nishkamya service.

3. A Karma Yogi should be absolutely free from greed, lust, anger and egoism. Then only he can do real useful service. Even if there are traces of these Doshas, he should try to remove them one by one.

4. A Karma Yogi should have an amiable, loving, social nature. He should have perfect adaptability, tolerance, sympathy, cosmic love and mercy. He should be able to adjust himself to the ways and habits of others. He should have an all-embracing and all-inclusive heart and equal vision. He should have a cool and balanced mind. He should rejoice in the welfare of others. He should have all the organs under perfect control. He should lead a very simple life. He should bear insult, disrespect, dishonour, censure infamy, disgrace, harsh words, heat and cold and the pain of diseases. He should have power of endurance. He should have absolute faith in himself, in God, in scriptures and in the words of his Guru. Such a man becomes a good Karma Yogi and reaches the Goal quickly.

5. The man who serves the world really serves himself. That man who helps others really helps himself. This is an important point. When you serve a man, when you serve your country, always think that the Lord has given you a rare opportunity to improve, correct and mould yourself by service. Be grateful to that man who has given you a chance to serve him.

6. Karma Yoga prepares the mind for the reception of Light or Knowledge. It expands the heart and breaks all barriers that stand in the way of unity or oneness. Karma Yoga is the effective Sadhana for Chitta Suddhi.

7. By doing selfless service you purify your heart. Egoism, hatred, jealousy, idea of superiority and all the kindred negative qualities will vanish. Humility, pure love, sympathy, tolerance, and mercy will be developed. Sense of separateness will be annihilated. Selfishness will be eradicated. You will get a broad and liberal outlook of life. You will begin to feel oneness and unity. Eventually you will attain knowledge of the Self. You will realise ‘One in All’ and ‘All in One.’ You will feel unbounded joy. World is nothing but manifestation of God. Service of humanity and country is service of God. Service is worship.

8. Generally people are impatient and they expect Siddhis after doing a little service. The real Karma Yogi who serves the people with humility and Atma Bhava (seeing God in every face) becomes a real ruler of the world. He is honoured and respected by all. The more service you do with Atma Bhava, the more power, energy, and capacity you will get. Practise this and feel.

9. When the thought of doing good to others becomes part and parcel of a man’s very being, then he will not entertain any least motive at all. He takes immense delight in serving others, in doing good to others. There is peculiar joy and Ananda in the vigorous Nishkamya service. He gets inner spiritual strength and power by performing motiveless and selfless actions.

10. Never grumble or murmur when you do service to others. Take delight in service. Be ever ready to serve others. Watch for opportunities to serve. Never miss a single opportunity. Create opportunities. Create field of good service.

11. In the practice of Nishkamya Karma Yoga, there is no loss of effort. There is no harm. There is no transgression also. Even a little of this practice can protect you from great fear of birth and death with its concomitant evils. You will reap the fruits of Karma Yoga, viz., Jnana. There is no uncertainty here. The path of Karma Yoga eventually leads to the attainment of Bliss of the Self.

Svadyaya for April 20, 2013
ASCENT TO THE DIVINE

Yoga transforms one's lower nature into the Divine nature
If you define yoga in the simplest term, it is the steady movement of the individual soul towards the Supreme Soul. Yoga is a steady ascent to the Divine. Yoga is not ‘knowing’, but it is for ‘being’ and ‘doing’. It is moving towards the Eternal. Beloved Atman! Live your life in such a way that all the movements and activities of your life may constitute an upward and Godward process culminating in the fullest unfoldment of your Divine Consciousness.

Yoga transforms one’s lower nature into the Divine nature. Yoga means ascending into purity. The destiny of the human being is evolution and we all are progressing towards ultimate perfection, since we are all meant to realise once again the innate Divinity. However, the normal course of human evolution is very very slow, requiring many lives. The technique evolved to rapidly go through this process of achieving fulfilment and perfection is named “Yoga”. Yoga means an intensification of evolution within a single life span, or perhaps even within just a few years.

Within you is the divine Essence, which is your true nature. You are not merely this body-mind complex, the body is only a dwelling-house and the mind is only an instrument through which you think and express yourself. The intellect is an instrument to ponder over the purpose of life. Beyond these three, you remain an eternal Spirit with Divinity inherent in you.

Yoga is attaining this Divinity, bliss and blessedness through union with the Supreme Universal Spirit. Yoga is God-experience. Yoga is the attainment of spiritual union with the Divine Source of your being. The ultimate cause of all sorrow is that we have forgotten our eternal link with the perennial source of infinite Joy, of never-ending Happiness. Bliss is in the Eternal Reality. That alone is the source of true happiness. It is the union with the Divine, which brings about a severance or a dissociation of man’s union with pain, sorrow, suffering and miseries of mundane life. Yoga is the ultimate way to succeed in this universal quest of man for liberating oneself from all sorrow, pain and suffering, and entering into a state of absolute Bliss and blessedness. And this can be brought about only by once again restoring our lost link with Brahman, whom we refer to as God.

God Bless You!
Swami Chidananda

(March 16,2013) Spirituality and Life by Swami Krishnananda

Spiritual message of the day: Spirituality and Life by Swami Krishnananda
(A Message issued on the occasion of Swamiji's 54th Birthday in April, 1976.)
Spirituality and Life

The philosophy and culture of India is one of Ananda or Bliss. "From Bliss-Absolute we have come; in Bliss-Absolute we are rooted; and to Bliss-Absolute are we destined," says the Taittiriya Upanishad. It is not a message of pain, agony and distress. Pessimism is unknown to India's culture. It is a culture of exuberant positivity of approach, an approximation to God in the end, who is the greatest of positivities. Life is held to be a movement from joy to joy, and it is this that we call the evolutionary process of the soul. It is movement from a lesser truth to a higher truth.

Everything is as a relative representation of God's perfection and so everywhere, even in the so-called erroneous movements of material, psychological and social forces, there is an element of God present, urging all these processes towards Perfection. To our culture, which is the culture of God, the culture of Perfection, all the duties of life become a manifestation of happiness. The glorious gospel of the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Bhagavadgita, which may be regarded as the tripod of India's message to mankind, provides us with the hopeful exhortation that we can never be helpless at any moment of our life. Our culture is the blossoming full-moon, the real 'Purnima' of hope after hope; aspiration after aspiration. May we recall to our minds, once again, the message of the saints and sages of all times and climes, who have plumbed into the depths of the Great Reality of the universe, that we exist in God, live in God, breathe in God, move in God and perform the functions of our life in the Kingdom of God.

The whole cosmos is vibrating within every cell of our personalities. Everything that is everywhere is also within us and is inseparable from us. This was the foundation of the doctrine of God's supreme perfection given to us by Acharya Sankara also, on the basis of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavadgita and the Brahma Sutras. Everything we need is in us. Everything required by us for our existence, every movement in evolution towards perfection, is implanted in our being. When we were born we brought with us everything that is necessary for us and we carry all these necessities with us wherever we move in this world. We cannot be separated from these needs or standing necessities; they are inseparable from our vital existence. The cosmic consciousness realises that the cosmos is itself. This is the spirit of true spirituality.

Svadyaya for Mar 16,2013 - The True Purpose of Life by Swami Chidananda

The True Purpose of Life

Glorious Immortal Self! There is a permanent Reality behind this entire universe. That great reality is of the nature of Bliss and blessedness. It is a state of untrammeled (not confined or limited) freedom, limitless peace, boundless wisdom and indescribable Bliss. And that Bliss, freedom, peace, wisdom and joy is your essential and eternal state. That is your real abode. That is your ultimate journey. This life has been given to you in order to realize that Reality. It is this achievement and achievement alone, which is the central purpose of your life.

Indian philosophy declares in bold and unmistakable terms that the great aim of human life is to attain supreme Bliss. It asserts: “All beings in this universe have come forth from Bliss, in Bliss they are sustained, and they are destined to attain that Bliss.” It is this perennial Bliss, which indeed is the great and ultimate Truth and Reality. The great ones who have realized through their intense inner effort the nature of the ultimate Reality, have stated in clear and unmistakable terms: “O mortals, you cannot find unalloyed perfect Happiness and Bliss in this imperfect and limited phenomenal universe. The ultimate state of joy and Bliss can be had only within your own Self, which has its source in the permanent and eternal Reality. All Bliss lie within you. You are yourself that Bliss.” This is your nature. The rediscovery of that living awareness of Bliss is the great purpose of your life. This is the goal of life for which we have taken birth on this earth-plane.

Life is not a haphazard flight from one object to another. Life is a quest full of significance and meaning. Therefore the sooner the eyes are opened to the great meaning of life, the greater the degree of perfection that will be attained. Otherwise, life would be like setting upon a journey without direction, or like getting onto a highway without the knowledge of the destination or route. Life is very precious. Say: “I have come here to realize the supreme state of blessedness and to experience the highest Bliss. I have been given this unique opportunity of a human birth in order to attain the ultimate goal.” The chance is now given to you. Who knows if the keen state of aspiration and devotion to the ideal will continue? Therefore, now is the time to make a supreme effort to realize the true purpose of life. Now is the time to make an earnest effort to attain the highest blessedness and the wondrous bliss of Realization
.
God Bless You!
Swami Chidananda
